Two farm workers in Central Hawke's Bay have had a quad bike accident only hours after the Minister of Labour Kate Wilkinson on Wednesday launched a national campaign aimed at raising the awarenesss of quad bike safety.

One worker is in a stable condition in Hawke's Bay hospital, after the quad bike he was riding rolled down a bank and through a fence.

A fellow worker, who was also admitted to hospital following the accident at at Omakere has been discharged.

Ms Wilkinson has said that there are more than 800 injuries from quad bike accidents each year, with an average of five being fatal.

She says over the next few months the Department of Labour will publish revised safety standards for farm quad bikes, and farmers who fail to follow them risk risk being prosecuted if a farm worker is injured or killed.
