One of the Tauranga region's major retail destinations has undergone a $15 million refurbishment project for its 25th anniversary, in time for the summer tourism surge.

The Bayfair Shopping Centre in Mount Maunganui houses 80 stores and has parking for 1600 cars.

Bay of Plenty MP Tony Ryall says the investment is one of a number of major construction developments creating employment in the Western Bay, including new schools and roads.

Statistics New Zealand says Tauranga was one of the fastest growing urban areas in the June 2010 year.
