Police in Auckland have netted 77 drink-drivers in a special operation this weekend.

Some 21,000 motorists were stopped at checkpoints around the city from Friday evening through to early Sunday morning.

Auckland road policing manager Inspector Gavin McDonald says most people were sober and driving safely.

He says police will intensify their efforts against drink driving in the lead-up to Christmas and throughout the holiday period.
