Cyber safety organisaton advoctes text-blocking

Cyber safety organisation Netsafe hopes other telecommunication companies will follow Vodafone's lead in introducing a new text-blocking service.

The free scheme begins on Monday and allows customers to block messages and pictures from up to 20 different numbers.

Vodafone says it receives up to 6000 calls about text-bullying every year and it is trying to combat the problem.

Netsafe says it has been lobbying mobile phone providers for a while to put these measures in place and hopes Telecom and 2degrees will follow suit.

Netsafe director Martin Cocker says it will not solve all the problems of cyber-bullying but will empower victims to take control of the situation.
