New Zealand long distance athlete Kimberley Smith has finished fifth in the New York marathon.

The Aucklander finished in a time of 2h 29min 28sec, just over 1 minute behind Kenyan winner Edna Kiplagat.

Kiplagat's time was 2h 28 mins 20 secs. Second was Shalane Flanagan of the United States, while Kenyan Mary Jepkosgei Keitany was third.

Smith's top five placing in the world's biggest marathon follows her 10th place in the London marathon earlier this year.

The 28-year-old is based in the United States and pulled out of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October, concerned about security and atmospheric conditions and to focus on the New York marathon.

Her long-term goal is to compete in the marathon at the London Olympics in 2012.
