New research suggests that millions of dollars would be saved every year if less food waste were dumped in landfills.
The report, by Greenfingers-Earthcare Environmental and Envirofert, was released by Environment Minister Nick Smith at a breakfast function on Tuesday morning.
Organic waste is the main component of waste collected from households: 250 kilograms of food waste per person is dumped in landfills each year.
The report says the country would save $20 million a year if it was collected separately from general waste.
Envirofert says food waste can be used to generate electricity and make biofuels and high-quality compost and fertiliser.
