Police warn about computer password scam

6:30 pm on 9 November 2010

Police in Wellington are warning people not to disclose computer passwords to strangers over the phone.

On Monday night, police received about 40 calls from Wellingtonians saying they'd been called by a person claiming to be a Microsoft employee.

The person offered to fix a computer virus, then asked people to disclose their passwords.

Last week, about 50 Wellington, Hutt Valley and Kapiti residents reported a similar experience.

The scam enables the caller to infiltrate the victim's computer once that person has handed over the password.

Police say anyone who gets such a call should end the call immediately.
