Auckland Council unsure of staff numbers

10:14 am on 10 November 2010

The new Auckland council does not know how many staff it has on the payroll.

New Zealand's biggest local body was officially formed 10 days ago and believes it has more than 8000 employees following the merger of eight local bodies.

The council says the figures it has are from a six-week-old media release from the Auckland Transition Agency which created the new council and was then dissolved.

The council says the first reliable information will come after payroll data being transferred from the former councils is processed in November.

Until then, there is also no precise information on the number of people who lost jobs in the amalgamation, or how many vacancies remain to be filled.
