Police in Wellington are hunting for a man who snatched a large amount of cash from a security guard in Newtown.

Detective Sergeant Martin Todd says the robbery happened about 11am on Wednesday as the security guard was leaving the TAB on the corner of Riddiford and Donald McLean streets.

Mr Todd says the offender snatched the cash bag and fled down Donald McLean Street, where he was met by two men. The three escaped in the direction of Fergusson Street.

The robber is described as a light-skinned Maori or Pacific Islander, aged in his 20s, of medium build and height. He was wearing a black T-shirt, blue jeans, black and white sneakers and a dark-coloured cap with a wide brim.
