The Telecommunications Users Association says data roaming rates for New Zealanders using their smart phones overseas are still too high.

Telecom has reduced its roaming rates to Australia, the United States and Britain, after Vodafone cut its rates in September.

Telecom has dropped its data roaming rates from $8 per megabyte to $100 for 100 megabytes.

However, users will still be charged $8 per megabyte until they have spent the $100.

Vodafone has dropped its rates from $10 dollars per megabyte to $5.

2Degrees charges the most at $30 per megabyte.

TUANZ business development manager Katherine Hall says the rates are still expensive and there is a lot of room for improvement.
