Three year 10 boys are being hailed as heroes following a fatal collision between a school bus and a car north of Auckland on Thursday.

One person died and two people were critically injured in the accident on Old North Road in Kumeu at 4.10pm.

Oliver Tayack, Joseph Coddington and Miles Broderick from Auckland's Rosmini College were among the 21 students travelling on the bus.

Principal Tom Gerrard says the boys spent about 40 minutes helped the injured using first aid skills learnt at Surf Life Saving training, and made sure the younger children were out of the way so they couldn't see anything.

Mr Gerrard says the boys and other students on the bus have been offered counselling by Victim Support.
