The last three members of a major paua poaching ring have been sentenced, with one given a term in prison.

The men were part of a ring known as the Rock Point Group, operating near Porirua.

They were among nine caught by Ministry of Fisheries officers in September last year.

Officers found nearly 1200 paua - more than half undersize - at a camp set up by the poachers.

Tulo Tuala has been sentenced to three years in prison and banned from all fishing for three years. He has now amassed 39 separate fisheries convictions.

The other two poachers were sentenced to seven months home detention and 300 hours community service.
