Three people have been killed in single-vehicle road accidents so far this weekend, all of them when vehicles rolled, and a teenager died when a vehicle rolled on a rural property.
Police say alcohol was involved in a fatal road smash in Otago early on Saturday morning involving two young farm workers from Ireland.
A 23-year-old man died when the Land-Rover in which he was travelling rolled and went through a fence in the Ida Valley, trapping him underneath.
His 21-year-old companion escaped with minor injuries.
Senior Sergeant Jill Woods of Alexandra police says the men had been drinking and neither was wearing a seatbelt.
Fatality near Franz Josef Glacier
Near the Franz Josef Glacier in South Westland, at about 4pm, a vehicle carrying seven people ran off Forks-Okarito Road and rolled. One person was killed and the other six all suffered minor injuries.
Police, fire and ambulance staff are still clearing the road and carrying out an initial scene investigation.
A third person was killed when a car rolled north of Cambridge in Waikato at about 7.30am, and earlier, a teenager died when a vehicle rolled on a rural property on Ruatoki Valley Road south of Whakatane at about 2.30am.
Police say a passenger ran several kilometres to get help, and a 14-year old trapped under the vehicle later died of his injuries.
