Shops want compo for five months of roadworks

Businesses in Wellington's Manners Mall are reporting on average a 40% loss in revenue caused by five months of road works to re-route the once pedestrian-only mall for buses.

About 20 shopkeepers plan to put their grievances to the city council on Tuesday, and demand compensation for what they say is thousands of dollars in lost income.

Manners Mall shop owner Tony Loveday says some businesses claim they have fallen behind in rent, and others unable to pay wages.

Mr Loveday says the roadworks have gone on longer than promised and have been noisier.

The council concedes there has been disruption, but says compensation is not given as a rule.
