An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale has been recorded north of Nelson.
The epicentre of the quake, which struck about 4pm on Monday, was 90 kilometres north of French Pass at a depth of 180 kilometres.
GNS Science says it would have been felt in Nelson and Wellington.
Police in Nelson say there have been no reports of damage.
