A high-ranking Australian naval officer on a diplomatic posting in New Zealand who was convicted of possessing more than 40,000 child pornography images has been named as Lieutenant Commander Mark Napier.

Napier, 44, who was working at the Australian high commission, had the images on a computer in his home office when the computer was seized in August.

Suppression orders preventing the media from naming Napier were lifted on Tuesday afternoon.

He admitted 16 charges of possessing offensive publications after becoming one of 25 people in New Zealand arrested after an international investigation by European police.

Napier was sentenced in Wellington District Court on Friday. He had waived diplomatic immunity.

Judge Bruce Davidson, noting his career was probably ruined, fined him $11,200, saying a community sentence was not practical because Napier had been ordered back to Canberra.

Judge Davidson said Napier had begun counselling, which he believed would continue in Australia.
