Opposition to renaming South Ridge after Hillary

11:48 am on 17 November 2010

The Geographic Board says most of the submissions received so far are against a proposal to honour Sir Edmund Hillary.

It says it's already received significant input about whether the South Ridge at Aoraki Mt Cook should be renamed Hillary Ridge.

Sir Edmund was the first to climb it in 1948.

The Geographic Board will make a recommendation to the Minister of Land Information next year.

It has received 55 submissions so far, 37 of which oppose the move.

Secretary Wendy Shaw is expecting more before submissions close on 30 November.

She says the minister will make the final decision about renaming the ridge.
