Australian immigration officials have told Auckland academic and author Jane Kelsey she is no longer eligible for visa-free entry because she is not an appropriate person under their immigration laws.
Professor Kelsey was detained on arrival in Sydney on Sunday night.
She was eventually allowed through, but was told she needed to apply for a visa for future visits, and she should seek a waiver from the Australian high commissioner.
Professor Kelsey was told she needed the visa because of a conviction related to the Springbok tour protests in the early 1980s, which resulted in a suspended prison sentence.
She says she has travelled regularly to Australia for years with no problems.
