Police in Timaru have arrested a man who allegedly sparked an armed offenders call-out on Sunday afternoon.

The armed police squad surrounded a large section of south Timaru at 3pm in search of a suspected gunman who may have been involved in a burglary.

They made a quick arrest at an old wool scouring business on King Street, but spent more than five hours searching the rest of the building.

Police would not confirm whether the man did have a firearm, but say no shots were fired by either police or the suspect.
