An Upper Hutt man who placed a tracking device on his former wife's car in what a judge described as a case of obsessive stalking has escaped a jail sentence.

Christopher Robinson, 36, was sentenced in the Upper Hutt District Court on Tuesday on six charges of breaching a protection order and one of making a false complaint.

Judge Stephen Harrop sentenced Robinson to six months' home detention and ordered him to pay reparation of $1500 for emotional harm caused to his former wife.
