American relatives of a prison officer who was slain on duty are adamant a coronial inquest must take place.
But the widow of Jason Palmer and the wider family in New Zealand say an inquest would be too painful to endure.
Mr Palmer died in hospital a day after being punched by an inmate whose cell he was unlocking at Spring Hill prison in Waikato on 15 May.
In September, Latu Kepu, was sentenced to six more years in prison for manslaughter.
The coroner is now asking whether the case should proceed to an inquest where all evidence relating to the death is reviewed.
Mr Palmer's mother and brother in the United States feel such a hearing is extremely important, saying not all of the details have been disclosed.
But Mrs Palmer and the wider family in New Zealand are adamant that no new information would be unearthed by an inquest, which they say would be too painful to endure.
Last week would have been Jason and Tracey Palmer's seventh wedding anniversary.
