A major roading project aimed at easing congestion on one of Auckland's busiest inner city routes is nearing a major milestone.
The Victoria Park project includes an underground tunnel with three northbound lanes, and four southbound lanes on the viaduct over the park.
A 300-metre-long trench is being constructed through Victoria Park, with workers digging from the north and south.
On Sunday afternoon both teams were due to break through, completing the trench, which will later be covered to create a tunnel.
That will allow northbound traffic to be moved from the viaduct into the tunnel and southbound lanes to be widened to use all of the viaduct.
The tunnel is due to open in the middle of 2012.
