Thousands of rail commuters have been delayed in Wellington due to a major signals and points system failure.
The failure occurred about 4.30pm on Monday, halting trains for about an hour.
Passengers on all train services except the Johnsonville line were left stranded at stations, as KiwiRail says it had no time to arrange bus replacements for peak services.
But it did get trains under way about 5.30pm, despite the fault not being fixed.
Services operated on a delayed timetable as the passenger backlog was cleared.
