Operation RAID, which stands for remove all impaired drivers, was carried out to highlight the broader implications associated with drink and drug driving.

Police say the weekend operation was timed to coincide with the beginning of the holiday season and was intended to keep the pressure on motorists to make sure their driving is safe at all times.

In total, 178 drivers were found to be over the legal blood alcohol limit.

Another 75 had their licences suspended, 877 other traffic offence notices were issued and a further 42 criminal offences were detected.
