150 lose jobs after Auckland printing plant closes

5:40 pm on 1 December 2010

Some 150 people have lost their jobs after the closure of APN's commercial printing plant in South Auckland.

The Engineering, Manufacturing and Printing Union says the workers' prospects are not good in the current economic climate as few new printing jobs are available.

The union's print and media national industry organiser says the closure on Tuesday is just one of a series of setbacks for the sector.

Louisa Jones says another 120 printers will lose their jobs when PMP Print in Warkworth closes its print facility next year.

She believes there will be further redundancies as technology changes and more work moves to the internet instead of traditional printing.

Ms Jones is calling on the Government to commit to keeping its print contracts in New Zealand at the very least.
