Pork prices tipped to increase

8:15 am on 2 December 2010

Agriculture Minister David Carter says prices of pork products will rise following a ban on sow stalls, which will come into effect by 2015.

He Carter says the announcement on Wednesday means New Zealand will have perhaps the strictest welfare code for pigs in the world.

He told Morning Report the public have been vocal in their demands for change and will put their money where their mouth is by choosing New Zealand products.

He said products can be labelled with their country of origin to encourage sales of domestic pork.

However, Mr Carter said the Government is not planning to make that labelling compulsory.
