Funding granted for kidney research

A senior researcher at the University of Otago has been granted $306,666 to create a computer model to predict the deterioration of kidneys.

Dr John Pickering, of Christchurch, says about one-third of patients with kidney injuries suffer rapid kidney deterioration and hopes his research will let doctors know which patients they need to be especially careful with.

He says rapid kidney failure can currently be detected only several days after it starts.

The model will be tested on patients in Christchurch hospital, with preliminary results expected in six months.
