A petition opposing the installation of household water meters has been presented to a meeting of Wellington City Council.
The Wellington Residents Coalition lobby group says 18,000 thousand people signed the petition.
The petition asked the council not to see water as a commercial commodity.
In response, the council reiterated its commitment to keeping its water services publicly owned and run on a not-for-profit basis.
