Coroner calls for culpability law

6:06 am on 4 December 2010

A Coroner in Rotorua is calling for the introduction of a law that imposes culpability on people who stand by and allow recidivist drink drivers behind the wheel of a car.

The recommendation by Dr Wallace Bain, is in relation to three motorcyclists who were killed by a drunk driver in 2007.

Gordon Armstrong crossed the centre line and crashed into the motorcyclists.

Armstrong, a recidivist and unlicenced drunk driver who also died, had been drinking for many hours beforehand.

The Coroner's report says Armstrong was asked not to drive, but nobody stopped him.

Dr Bain says culpability should be with any person who was in a position to know, and do something, but failed to act.
