A mid-sized car from Japanese manufacturer Suzuki has beaten luxury European brands to win the Automobile Association's Supreme Motoring Excellence Award.
The Suzuki Kizashi beat cars from Mercedes Benz and BMW to win the AA's overall prize.
Volkswagen was the most successful manufacturer, winning four awards, while the Toyota Corolla was named Car of the Decade.
The Corolla was first manufactured in 1966 and the expert panel of judges called it a robust workhorse.
The AA says its motoring excellence awards are the Oscars of the New Zealand automotive industry.
