Government backs multi-storey wooden buildings

The Government has backed an organisation that has been launched to promote multi-storey buildings made from wood.

The Design Advisory Centre was launched by the timber industry last night to challenge the dominance of steel and concrete by offering design information to architects, builders and property developers.

Canterbury University's Professor of Wood Design, Andy Buchanan, says new products such as laminated beams, pre-stressed wood and high-strength wooden screws can create buildings of up to 10 storeys, but many builders do not know how to use them.

Forestry Minister David Carter says the Government is right behind the centre because of timber's potential to aid economic growth and its environmental benefits.
