A woman charged with the murder of a newborn baby in Christchurch has been remanded in custody for a psychiatric assessment.
Detective Inspector Tom Fitzgerald says the 27-year-old appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday.
Mr Fitzgerald says a post-mortem will determine the age and gender of the baby.
He says suppression orders imposed by the court prevent him from releasing any other details at this stage.
Mr Fitzgerald says police will be talking to several other people, but they're not looking for anyone else in connection with the baby's death.
The woman has been remanded in custody until 22 December.
