The new chairman of the Wellington SPCA board says the organisation is in crisis, and needs about $3.5 million in order to survive the next 18 months.
Craig Shepherd, who was appointed chair at the organisation's annual general meeting on Wednesday, says the SPCA has lost nearly $1 million in the past year.
He adds that plans to move the SPCA into the old Fever Hospital in Mount Victoria have stalled, and costs to do so have been scaled back by about $5 million.
Mr Shepherd confirms that the animal rescue organisation is on track to lose $700,000 this financial year.
The board will discuss how much money they have to work with, and what they need to do to save the organisation from financial crisis, at its meeting next week.
