Police in Nelson have arrested a Swedish tourist in relation to the alleged spiking of drinks at a North Island bar.

On Saturday night, three men and a woman who were socialising at the Cri Cafe Bar and Grill in Napier either collapsed or began having convulsions.

All were admitted to Hawke's Bay Hospital for treatment.

Police found a substance at the bar which they suspect was added to people's drinks.

Detective Senior Sergeant Nick Reid, of Napier, says colleagues in Nelson on Thursday charged a 29-year-old man with administering a Class B controlled drug and with indecent assault.

The man was remanded to appear in Napier District Court.
