Airport boss makes unscheduled departure

10:45 pm on 9 December 2010

The board of Invercargill Airport says it is stunned that its general manager has quit after spending just eight days in the job.

Gordon Johnstone has handed in his keys and can not be found by staff.

Airport chairperson Merv Cook says he is shocked and would like an explanation.

Mr Cook says it was a key appointment which followed a rigourous appointment process.

Officials say attempts to find and speak to Mr Johnstone have been unsuccessful.

Invercargill mayor Tim Shadbolt says he did not even have a chance to meet Mr Johnstone and it is a mystery as to why he is not at work.
