Job losses in the Auckland Council amalgamation were higher than previously estimated.
The agency which streamlined Auckland's eight councils into one designed 8200 jobs in the new structure, 1200 fewer than a year earlier.
In fact, Auckland Council and its related agencies employ only 7400, due to a large number of voluntary departures on top of redundancies.
Managers have approved the filling of more than half of the 800 vacancies, but chief executive Doug McKay says recruiting occurs only as needed.
Mayor Len Brown says managers will try to fill around 400 vacancies when the time is right, but in the meantime all services are running well.
Auckland Council came into being on 1 November.
