Schools leave national standards out of reports

Some primary and intermediate schools are defying the Government by leaving national standards in reading, writing and maths out of their end-of-year reports.

Principals told Radio New Zealand they are not using the standards in their reports because there is not enough clarity about them.

Instead, they will tell parents how their child's performance compares with averages for their age group.

But the Ministry of Education says parents should ask schools about their child's progress against the standards.

It says schools should report to parents twice a year on the standards and if they have not done that, it will want to know why.
