Pilot has lucky escape after Cardrona crash

A helicopter pilot carrying out deer farm work in Wanaka has escaped with minor injuries after crashing into a hill.

The helicopter crashed and rolled down an 80-metre slope in the Cardrona Valley about 5pm on Thursday.

The Rescue Coordination Centre was alerted to the crash after the pilot activated an emergency distress beacon, but the helicopter company was the first to the scene.

The crash has been referred to the Civil Aviation Authority.
