Pressure on Wellington City Council to find savings

6:20 am on 16 December 2010

Wellington City councillors have been told they will have to think hard about where money can be found to pay for the council's $87 million leaky homes bill.

At a meeting on Wednesday, council officers said there are a range of options for councillors to consider, including asset sales, staff attrition and increased rates.

In September, the council voted for the Government's leaky home rescue package, which means it must pay 25% of the repair costs in unresolved cases where owners opt in to the scheme.

One councillor, John Morrison, says the council is under increasing financial pressure, but no-one has been prepared to make difficult decisions.
