Rugby World Cup bosses say they are pleased with tickets sales ahead of the tournament in New Zealand next year.

Figures released on Thursday afternoon show 864,000 tickets have been sold out of a projected 1.45 million, with sales lagging slightly in the regions.

Rugby New Zealand 2011 chief executive Martin Snedden says ticket revenues have reached $166 million and the target is $268 million.

Mr Snedden says overall, ticket sales are performing well and he is not worried by the regional sales.

Figures show 45,000 out of 59,000 tickets remain unsold in Rotorua, while in Whangarei, just 8000 of the 24,000 tickets available have been purchased.

Mr Snedden says at least 85,000 people from overseas have bought tickets so far.

The head of the International Rugby Board, Mike Miller, is in New Zealand to inspect facilities and says he is pleased with the preparations so far.

Mr Miller is also the managing director of Rugby World Cup Ltd and believes ticket sales will pick up.

He says he is particularly impressed at the number of international visitors already booked to attend the tournament.

Survey results show independent travellers are planning to come to New Zealand for an average of 23 days and 44% say it will be their first visit.

The tournament runs from 9 September to 23 October. The final will be played at Eden Park in Auckland.
