Workplace injury figures seen as inaccurate

Figures on workplace injuries suggest education is the least safe area to work in, but a health and safety lawyer is disputing the accuracy of the data.

A Department of Labour report shows 956 'serious harm' notifications were recorded in the education sector this year, yet there were only nine in the high risk area of forestry.

The injuries reported in education account for almost a fifth of the year's total of 5424.

The School Trustees Association says they include everything from a stubbed toe to a child falling off a chair.

And health and safety lawyer Hazel Armstrong disputes the accuracy of many of the report's other figures.

Ms Armstrong says ACC data shows there have been 196,000 workplace claims this year. She says that suggests under-reporting in some areas.
