The Fire Service is warning there is an extreme fire risk in Canterbury, where temperatures have climbed as high as 34 degrees.
The Canterbury and West Coast Regional Rural Fire Committee says residents should keep their grass mown and green if possible, and take care when lighting fires in the open.
It says people can be held liable for damages if a fire they light gets out of control.
