Wright excited by appointment as cricket coach

John Wright says he's both excited and humble about his appointment as New Zealand cricket coach, after twice being overlooked for the position.

The former Test opening batsman and coach of India and English county side Kent replaces Mark Greatbatch, who was in the job for less than a year.

Many think he should have got the job years ago. The appointment takes effect immediately.

However, Greatbatch retains a role as a batting coach, as well as heading a selector's panel with Glenn Turner and Lance Cairns. Captain Dan Vettori is no longer a selector.

The next cricket World Cup is two months away.
