More defective buses ordered off roads

8:00 pm on 21 December 2010

Four buses have been ordered off the road by police in Christchurch because of brake problems and other defects.

Twenty-five buses were stopped and checked in New Brighton on Tuesday morning, following an operation last month that found 62 buses in need of repair.

One bus on Tuesday was categorised as unsafe and ordered off the road immediately. Three others were also ordered out of service for not complying with lesser rules regarding brake balance.

Sergeant Max Newman says new certificates of fitness will have to be obtained for the four buses. He says police are pleased with the outcome of the operation, showing a vast improvement since last month.

He says the bus companies have clearly taken on board the public's concerns and made an effort to improve.
