Convicted ex-MP seeks Supreme Court hearing

6:45 pm on 21 December 2010

The lawyer for disgraced former MP Taito Phillip Field is applying to have his case heard at the Supreme Court following the failure of an appeal against his conviction and sentence for bribery and corruption.

Field was sent to prison last year after being found guilty of 11 counts of bribery and corruption and 15 of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He was charged after accepting labour from Thai people whom he helped with immigration matters. He then tried to cover this up during an inquiry.

Last month the Court of Appeal dismissed Field's appeal against his conviction and sentence on all grounds.

His lawyer, Helen Cull QC, says she has been instructed to file an application to the Supreme Court to ask if it will be prepared to hear Field's appeal.

She says a decision should come back early next year.
