A leading anti-apartheid campaigner says the late Tom Newnham inspired generations of New Zealanders to fight against racism wherever they saw it.

The life of the long-serving secretary of the Citizens Association for Racial Equality (CARE), who died last week aged 84, was celebrated at the Mt Eden War Memorial Hall in Auckland on Tuersday morning.

John Minto told Waatea News Mr Newnham's activism stemmed from when he was a teacher in Maori communities like Te Araroa on the East Coast, Pukekohe and Otara.

As well as his high-profile campaigns against sporting tours to and from apartheid-era South Africa, Mr Newnham fought for Maori land rights and other causes such as getting translators into hospitals.
