A post-mortem has been done on the body of a five-year-old girl found dead in her bed in Napier on Tuesday.
A 24-year-old man appeared in the Napier District Court on Tuesday charged with assaulting the girl, whom police on Wednesday named as Sahara Jayde Baker-Koro.
Napier's police area commander, Inspector Kevin Kalff, says the girl's body has been released to her mother, siblings and wider family, who are grief-stricken.
He says further investigative work into the cause of the child's death needs to be done, and police won't comment on how she died.
They have finished a scene examination of the home, in Riverbend Rd, Onekawa.
