Four consortiums want Wiri prison contract

3:08 pm on 23 December 2010

Four consortiums are keen to design, build and run a proposed new prison at Wiri in south Auckland.

Expressions of interest closed on Wednesday for the public-private contract for a 960-bed men's prison.

One of the consortiums is led by Serco, which last week won the contract to manage Auckland Central Remand Prison at Mt Eden.

For the Wiri prison project it has joined forces with Fletcher Building and the financier Macquarie.

Prison multinationals G4S and GEO are also interested in filling the contract.

The Corrections Department will confirm its shortlist on 7 February.
