Car 'came close to colliding with plane'

10:45 am on 24 December 2010

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission says a security officer's car came close to colliding with an aircraft landing at Dunedin airport in May.

The commission says the car was driven on to the runway at night in heavy rain ahead of a landing Metroliner freight plane with two pilots on board.

It says a collision was narrowly avoided because the driver had kept to the shoulder of the runway and stopped soon after driving on to it.

It says new procedures have since been introduced for the Aviation Security Service, and training of officers has improved.
