Concern at cost to council of keeping Sevens

2:00 pm on 24 December 2010

The Wellington Employers' Chamber of Commerce is concerned about the cost of Wellington hosting the Rugby Sevens until 2016.

The chamber says it's wonderful news the city is keeping the tournament, but regrets that the council has had to commit more money to do so.

The chamber's president, Richard Stone, says the annual event is a fantastic advertisement for Wellington and makes a substantial contribution to the local economy.

However, he says, having the council commit more money to win the rights raises questions about events funding generally.

Mr Stone says the council has a very good record on attracting events, but he feels there can be significant risks involved in contributing large amounts of money, including the potential for making a loss.
